Meet Nancy Farrell
Nancy is an artist who has lived and worked in Ontario for over thirty year. After a career as a Speech-Language Pathologist she returned to university and graduated with an Honours BA in Fine Art from the University of Guelph. She has furthered her art studies through numerous workshops in Canada and the United States where she has continued to experiment in combining diverse media. Her unique work is found in many private collections in Europe and in North America.

Currently Nancy works in sculpture, painting and mixed media and has been involved in numerous solo, group and juried exhibitions. She has won many awards for her painting and sculpture and continues to delight in experimenting and developing new directions for her work. She continues to be known for her strong use of colour, her ability to paint and sculpt “mood” and her intuitive use of line. Recent new work involves new non-objective paintings and new sculpture using found and recycled materials.

She maintains a studio space in her home in Guelph, Ontario, which is open by appointment. Upcoming shows are listed under “Artist Appearances”. She can be contacted at Nancy@NancyFarrell.com or 519-823-0836.

Brief Artist Statement (painting):

My painting uses layered images to explore relationships of colour, form, shape and line. Personal symbols are often included in the surface. From literal representations of organic and technological forms, my work has developed into complex abstractions and then even further into non-objective images.

My medium is usually acrylic which allows for multi-level layering, bold colour and texturing, scraping and etching of the paint surface. Other materials and media are frequently added to complete the painting. Intuitive brush work provides for energetic use of line and shape, and layering of forms permits the illusion of recession.

Brief Artist Statement (sculpture):

My sculpture has centered around the use of clay. Initial work was very representative, focusing on the figure. Narrative has always been important and the figures frequently told an interior story. The clay pieces were finished with smoke-firing or with cold finishes to suit the mood of the work.

More recently, my clay work has focused on abstracting figures with increased emphasis on their mood and gesture. At the same time I have begun to include other media, particularly ‘found materials’. It may be that, in the near future, the ‘found materials’ will find a voice of their own.
